About Our Health Coach in Aiea, HI
Aloha! My name is Ashlyn Young, a health coach in Aiea, HI, and I’m excited to share my story with you. Like many people, I have struggled with obesity for years and been referred to as a "professional yo-yo dieter." I joined multiple weight loss programs, worked with a dietitian, tried various fad diets, and even became a gym enthusiast. With these programs, I managed to lose over 100 pounds twice, only to regain it in half the time it took to lose it, making me feel frustrated and confused.
A Surgical Change
Despite being an intelligent, hardworking, and dedicated woman who has succeeded in other areas of my life, I found it incredibly challenging to manage my weight until November 14, 2012, when I underwent gastric bypass surgery. This surgery transformed my life and gave me a valuable tool to achieve a new lifestyle. Since then, things have continued to improve, and I now support others experiencing a similar, life-changing journey as a certified personal trainer.
Experience
Besides being a lifestyle coach, I have dedicated over 35 years to the healthcare industry, particularly in the Center for Health Living and the Bariatric Surgery departments. During this time, I have taught exercise, behavioral, and nutrition classes, as well as coached non-surgical patients and those preparing for or recovering from bariatric surgery. Additionally, in 2020, I designed and implemented a post-bariatric program to address the need for follow-up care after surgery.
Life Improvement
Even as a personal wellness coach and post-bariatric patient, I still face challenges related to obesity. This journey inspired me to become a personal trainer so that I can help others who struggle with their weight, too. My goal is to make exercise enjoyable and to demonstrate that food and diet are not the only contributing factors to obesity. Lifestyle choices also play a significant role in an individual’s ability to exercise, so I help people overcome these struggles.
Experience in Healthcare and Bariatrics
Since 1989, I have spent over 35 years in the healthcare industry. Majority of those years have been spent in the Center for Health Living department and the Bariatric Surgery department.
I have taught exercise, behavioral & nutrition classes as well as have coached non-surgical and pre/post-bariatric patients. In 2020 I designed and implemented a post-bariatric program that meets the need for post-surgery follow-up.
Dedicated to Improving Lives
As a post-bariatric patient, I continue to face challenges with obesity. I became a personal trainer to help others who also struggle with their weight. I want to make exercise enjoyable and show how food and diet are not the only factors of obesity. Lifestyle also plays a big part in someone’s ability to exercise.
